The Issues, Program, Information, Registration
Article 130 of the Maastricht Treaty demands coherency as the basic principle of EU development policy. All political decisions that could effect developing countries must take developmental goals into account without producing contradictory results. The example of fisheries policy shows, however, that the fisheries agreement with ACP countries counteract developmental measures for the fisheries sector in partner countries.
The people of the West African countries south of the Sahara are hit hardest by the effects of the fishery policy of the industrial nations - especially the fishery agreements of the EU. Not only is fish vital to food security - the artisanal fisheries play an important role in the employment, income security and standard of living of poor populations and are directly effected by competition with the industrial fleets of the EU.
During this international Congress with European and ACP participants, strategies shall be discussed for food security in West Africa and the long-term security of biological resources. Measures to be discussed include: Fair Fishery Agreements, sustainable fish management, improved control and monitoring of fishing practices, economical support and developmental co-operation and pulling out the European fleets.
