Together with over 60 businesses, associations, NGOs, think tanks, and other civil society organisations, Germanwatch founded the “European ETS2 Action Alliance”. This alliance demands a timely and effectiv implementation of the Emissions Trading System for Buildings and Road Transport (ETS2). The alliance summarised their demands in a joint letter to the President of the EU-Commission Ursula von der Leyen and other EU politicians.

ETS2 strengthens European climate policy as well as the competitiveness and resilience of the European economy. It supports the achievement of climate targets, given that the buildings and transport sectors have so far been among the largest emitters. At the same time, ETS2 enhances Europe’s competitiveness by providing a reliable CO₂ price signal that accelerates innovation in energy efficiency, electrification and clean technologies. Companies that invest early in climate friendly solutions gain cost advantages, reduce their exposure to volatile fossil fuel markets and improve their position in global markets that increasingly demand climate neutral products.

ETS2 also contributes to a more geopolitically independent and resilient economy by reducing reliance on fossil energy imports. To fully realise these benefits, however, ETS2 must be implemented in a timely and effective manner to ensure the planning certainty that businesses and households urgently need.
