Germany currently faces a political challenge towards the transformation of its energy system, known as "Energiewende." Many people associate the "Energiewende" in Germany with the nuclear catastrophe in Fukushima 2011. However, the starting point for the German "Energiewende" is rooted in the increasing environmental awareness and the anti-nuclear movement of the 70s. In the 70s, the term "Energiewende" had already been coined and was used by nuclear opponents, who searched for alternative forms of energy supply...

Germanwatch views a new landmark decision by the German federal government as a crucial but not entirely sufficient signal towards the UN climate negotiations in Lima/Peru. Today, the German federal government decided upon additional emission reduction measures that shall guarantee that Germany reaches its 2020 greenhouse gas reduction goal of 40% below the 1990 level.

Declaration by Alstom Deutschland AG, Deutsche Shell Holding GmbH, EnBW AG, E.ON SE, Otto GmbH & Co KG, Puma SE in cooperation with Germanwatch e.V.
Today, Germanwatch and six big German and European companies published a declaration in which they call on the German government to support the quick and long-term fix of the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS). The declaration, signed by Alstom, EnBW, E.ON, Otto, Puma, Shell, and Germanwatch, demands to enhance security for low-carbon investments done and planned. Low prices for CO2 are like posion for them. They therefore urge the German government to act.

Potentials thwarted by nuclear power and coal
September 2010, the German government presented the draft of its energy concept. It is marked by striking contradictions. In view of the large energy utilities’ financially strengthened role and the shift of competition rules into their direction, it is doubtful whether the concept can be successful.

Einhundert Prozent Erneuerbare Energien in Deutschland und der EU bis 2050 – das war die Kernforderung der Kampagne „100 Prozent Zukunft“. Um dieses Ziel zu erreichen, konnten BürgerInnen, Organisationen und Wirtschaftsvertreter ihre Projekte lokal vernetzen und Politiker vor Ort motivieren, für die Energiewende aktiv zu werden. Das Team Deutsche und EU-Klimapolitik setzt die Arbeit der Kampagne bei Germanwatch auf mehreren Ebenen fort, etwa durch ein Handbuch zu Bürgerbeteiligung beim Stromnetzausbau.
