German Climate Finance to Latin America

preview image

Germany’s climate finance for Latin America plays a an important role in the implementation of international climate and development goals. How substantial are Germany’s finance commitments, what strategic approach do they follow, and which financial instruments are used?

This policy brief examines Germany’s climate finance commitments to Latin America in the years 2023 and 2024 through four analytical lenses: the scale and evolution of financial commitments, the balance between mitigation and adaptation finance, the sectoral distribution of supported activities, and the financial instruments employed. By focusing on the commitment side of climate finance, the analysis sheds light on strategic priorities and policy intent, while acknowledging that commitments do not necessarily translate directly into disbursements or on-the-ground impact. The brief aims to contribute to ongoing policy discussions on the adequacy, balance, and strategic orientation of bilateral climate finance in the Latin American context.
