The US attack on Venezuela - what the operation reveals about the risks of fossil fuels for regional development and security

When Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro was arrested in early January 2026 following a US attack, many believed that these events were closely linked to the country's vast oil reserves.

The annually published Climate Change Performance Index by Germanwatch assesses climate mitigation efforts across the globe. In our new CCPI blog post, we take the events on the Latin American coast as a moment to reflect on the role of fossil fuels in regional security, economic development, and long-term investment decisions. Among other things, we raise the question of what security policy implications accelerated decarbonization and electrification of the global economy could have.
