Africa is at a crossroads. Despite holding 60% of the world’s solar potential, alongside abundant wind, hydro, and geothermal resources, the continent generates only 20% of its electricity from renewables, leaving over 600 million people without access. This energy gap presents a unique opportunity to leapfrog toward a clean, inclusive, and resilient future.
This policy brief examines how three flagship initiatives – the Accelerated Partnership for Renewables in Africa (APRA), Mission 300, and the African Green Industrialization Initiative (AGII) – can be aligned to unlock Africa’s renewable energy potential, advance green industrialisation, and broaden energy access. It provides targeted recommendations for Germany and other partners to enhance strategic coherence, mobilise catalytic finance, and promote social inclusion. By strengthening coordination across these initiatives, policymakers can ensure that Africa’s renewable transition delivers sustainable growth, equitable development, and meaningful progress toward African and global climate goals.
